Healthy Heart - Cardiovascular - High Cholesterol, Heart Disease

Do you have a strong family history of heart disease or stroke? Do you have high blood pressure? Have you been told that your cholesterol is too high, but don't know how to go forward if you're not keen on taking prescription medication that may give you side effects?

Having a risk of a heart attack is worrying when you are told by your GP that you need to take medication such as statins which reduce your cholesterol in your blood.  Your GP won't tell you that cholesterol is essential for life!  It's required for so many essential biochemical and physiological processes and therefore lowering your cholesterol with a statin may not necessarily improve your overall health and may create many problems such as fatigue and brain fog, and the general feeling of being not quite right.

Do you want to take control of your health? Do you want to be much more proactive about prevention of heart disease and stroke? It isn't just about cholesterol, as many people who have a heart attack or stroke have normal cholesterol levels. You need to dig deeper to understand what your true risk of is.

Taking control of your health will involve making diet and lifestyle changes

Are you confused about whether you should eat a low-fat diet? Are you confused about what's a healthy food?   Do you need support to make these lifelong changes? Seeing a nutritional professional with expertise in cardiovascular risk is the way forward if you want to achieve better short term and long term health.

I offer additional functional tests - click here to view these - which sit outside those done as standard by your GP. may be hugely helpful to understand what your true risk is. Measurements such as homocysteine, hsCRP (a measure of inflammation), Apo(a) (a specific risk factor linked to cholesterol) as well as oxidised and small dense LDL particles are much more sensitive and specific measures which can be modified by dietary change, prescribed medication (where appropriate) and nutritional supplements.  An understand of your genetic risks using nutrigenomic testing can also be performed if you have a strong family history click here to view these tests.

FAQs — Heart Health & Cardiovascular Support

Yes — nutritional therapy can be a powerful complement to conventional medical care. By using evidence-based dietary and lifestyle strategies, we aim to improve your lipid profile (LDL, HDL, total cholesterol, triglycerides), reduce inflammation, support healthy blood pressure, and promote vascular health. Together we’ll look at what’s causing imbalances and build a sustainable plan that reduces cardiovascular strain.
Probably — diagnostic tests are often essential to get a clear picture of your cardiovascular risk. These might include a lipid panel (cholesterol, LDL, HDL, triglycerides), C-reactive protein (CRP), blood pressure measurement, blood glucose / HbA1c, and possibly functional markers like oxidative stress or endothelial function. I may recommend specific tests we need, but we’ll always consider cost, benefit, and relevance. You should continue your medical monitoring (through your GP or cardiologist) in parallel.
No — the goal is balance and sustainability, not extreme restriction. We’ll work together to reduce harmful elements (e.g. unhealthy fats, processed foods, excess refined carbs) and replace them with heart-supporting nutrients (unsaturated fats, fibre, phytonutrients, whole-foods). You don’t have to give up foods you enjoy forever — much of the work is finding versions or patterns that support your heart health while fitting your preferences and lifestyle.
It depends on your starting point, adherence, other health conditions, medications, and how much adjustment is needed. Many patients we work with begin to see favourable shifts in lipid levels, blood pressure, or inflammation markers within 8–12 weeks of consistently following their personalised plan. Deeper changes or stabilisation may take 3–6 months or more. Ongoing follow-ups let us adapt your plan as needed to optimise results.
